Making Music. Creating Community.

Turning Dreams Into Reality

Spirit Handpans was founded in June of 2016 in Asheville, NC by Rebecca Dancyger at the age of 21. Rebecca fell in love with handpans at 16 after falling in love with them from a video online. She immediately dove into the world of handpans and it quickly became the focal point of her life. Conceived and grown by a young woman, Spirit Handpans seeks to inspire dreamers to chase even the biggest of ideas.

A Brief History of the Handpan.

The origin of the handpan starts with the steel pan which was created in the 1930s in Trinidad and Tobago. The steel pan was created as a result of a deep love for music and resilience to oppression. Click below for more info.

In 2001, a company called PANArt developed a new relative instrument of the steel pan. This instrument was similar, yet the intention was to sit it on your lap and play it with your hands. They called this instrument the Hang, meaning “hand”.

The sound of the Hang, inspiring many all around the world, quickly evolved into handpans. “Handpan” is now the common name for this steel instrument we play with our hands. Around 2010, knowledge of handpans started growing rapidly and more makers appeared. Today, hundreds of people are building handpans. Handpans are quite young and are still history in the making.

It’s Only Possible Through Gratitude.

Handpan Community. You have taught, healed, supported, and have shown that family is limitless.

Teachers. You seed and water spiritual growth, inspire eagerness to  learn, and you make being human a little bit easier.

Jon Antzoulis. You put a hammer in my hand and taught me how to hit steel with grace. Thank you for never giving up on me and showing me the path of steel.

William Bakst, Dante Bucci, and Jim Dusin. Spirits who have passed on that are held in the heart of Spirit Handpans.
