About Me

Hello there! I'm Rebecca, the soul and hands behind Spirit Handpans. My journey with these captivating instruments began in 2011 when I discovered a video online of Daniel Waples playing a Panart Hang. It was a classic on his D minor PANArt hang and I was enthralled.

My Journey

I began not as a maker, but as a deeply moved listener and player who had a background in concert flute and a bit of guitar.

The ethereal resonance of the handpan struck a chord within me, like it does so many others, igniting a passion that bloomed into a hunger to learn how to make these instruments.

What started as a personal fascination blossomed in 2015 into a dedicated pursuit of sonic artistry when I started building handpans full time.

This decision was made easier by the support and friendship of Jon Antzoulis of Aura Handpan. He put a hammer in my hand and taught me how to hit steel with grace for close to 2 years.

This led me down a path of continuous learning, experimentation, and a profound interconnectedness with the craft and industry. This passion has only grown stronger with each meticulously crafted instrument.

My aim is to inspire dreamers to chase even the biggest of ideas.

Whatever your gender, sexual orientation, age, or ability, anything you can dream is within reach and no dream is too big.

The Art of the Craft

For me, building a handpan is more than just shaping metal; it's about channeling intention and precision into every curve and dimple, and infusing Spirit into every finished instrument.

My many years of experience have allowed me to hone a deep understanding of the nuanced physics, geometry, and acoustics that bring these instruments to life, allowing me to craft a masterfully built, high quality instrument.

I’m committed to a level of craftsmanship that honors the instrument's potential for breathtaking sound and enduring quality.

Each handpan from Spirit Handpans is a testament to this dedication, a harmonious blend of technical expertise and artistic intuition, designed to resonate not just with the ear, but with the soul.

More Than Instruments, Being a Community

Beyond the workshop, I believe in the power of music to connect and uplift. I'm actively involved in the handpan community as a teacher and organizer of handpan classes and events online, in person, and at handpan gatherings.

Being part of this vibrant handpan community means I'm constantly surrounded by inspiring sounds. I absolutely love discovering the unique styles and heartfelt expressions of handpan players like Amy Naylor, Dan Mulqueen, Yatao, and Quentin Kayser.

I have also improved my personal percussive skills as a player from teachers like Dante Bucci, Jacob Cole, Aaron Marsala, David Kuckhermann, David Cherrier, and many others!

Beyond the Melodies - Other Notes in My Life

When I'm not shaping steel or immersed in the world of handpans, you might find me hiking in the gorgeous mountains of Appalachia, throwing pottery, gardening, snuggling with the cats, book in hand, or catching live music in town. I often get asked about my tattoos, and each one is part of my story. I'm so grateful to the amazing artists who brought them to life, including the fantastic Arielle Seltzer of Thistle and Clover and Nick Friederich of Forever Faithful.

Originally from New Jersey, I have been living in and Around Asheville, NC since 2016 when I moved here to found Spirit Handpans, and enjoy a vastly different cultural experience. I love being surrounded by an abundance of nature and art.

Contrary to popular assumption, my workshop soundtrack isn't solely handpans; I'm a big podcast fan, exploring topics from health to business. Musically, while I of course love handpan music, my personal favorites span indie folk and rock, classic rock, hip hop, and electronic genres.

I strive to create an environment where open and vulnerable conversations feel natural. Building genuine understanding and offering caring support in my friendships is something I deeply value.

Inclusivity

For me, the handpan is a unifying force to bring all types of people together. I deeply value inclusivity in my life and industry and aim to build a community where every voice is heard and celebrated. Whatever your gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, or abilities, you belong here.

From My Hands to Yours

Ultimately, my greatest joy comes from knowing that the handpans I create bring beauty, tranquility, and inspiration into the lives of others. I pour my heart and soul into each instrument, and I’m thrilled at the prospect of connecting you with a handpan that resonates deeply with your own unique musical journey. I hope we get the chance to create some beautiful music together.
